Georgia Southern freshman Nanaka Kijima has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Kijima went 4-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles as the Eagles extended their current win streak to seven with four wins last week .The Chiba, Japan, native began the week with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Jacksonville State's Polina Ramenskaja on Tuesday, then picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over the College of Charleston's Ella Faessler on Friday. Kijima capped the week with a pair of 6-1, 6-0 wins over Amelie Allard and Nyanquie Tomegah of Queens (NC), improving her singles record this Spring to 7-1.
She paired with Ana Tsitavets to collect a 6-1 doubles win over the Queens (NC) duo of Kelsey Sinclaire andd Nyanquie Tomegah on Sunday. Georgia Southern is 7-1 this season, the third-best start in school history and the best start since 1982.
Kijima is only the second Eagle to earn Player of the Week honors from the Sun Belt, joining Nadja Meier, who was the league's weekly honoree twice, on February 12, 2020, and March 31, 2021.
Kijima and the No. 74-ranked Eagles are in action on Wednesday, taking on North Florida at 2 p.m. at the Wallis Tennis Center.
