Georgia residents access aid after Hurricane Helene devastation

Hurricane Helene has caused significant damage in parts of Georgia, prompting a coordinated response from local, state, and federal agencies to assist affected residents. Resources have been made available for those impacted by the hurricane.

Local authorities advise contacting county emergency services and checking the Georgia Power Outages Map for updates on power restoration efforts. At the state level, the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA) is providing support and can be reached at 404-635-7200. Residents are encouraged to report any damages to GEMA or use the Hurricane Helene Cleanup Hotline at 844-965-1386 for assistance with cleanup operations.

Federal resources are also accessible for agricultural losses through local USDA Service Centers or by calling 877-508-8364. Various USDA disaster assistance programs are available, including factsheets in English and Spanish, as well as tools like the Disaster Assistance Discovery Tool and Farm Loan Assistance Tool.

FEMA offers aid to homeowners and renters in Elbert, Butts, and Newton counties who suffered uninsured damage due to Hurricane Helene. Assistance may cover temporary housing, home repairs, low-cost loans for property losses, immediate needs for housing and food, among other recovery programs. Applications can be submitted online at DisasterAssistance.gov or via phone at 800-621-3362.

Applicants will receive an eligibility letter from FEMA detailing their application status and required actions. It is crucial to read this letter carefully as it outlines potential assistance amounts and necessary documentation such as proof of insurance coverage or ownership.

For those wishing to appeal a FEMA decision or award amount, documents supporting the appeal must be submitted within 60 days of receiving the decision letter. These may include repair estimates or receipts demonstrating further need for assistance. Appeals can be sent through various channels including uploading them online at DisasterAssistance.gov or mailing them directly to FEMA's address provided in official communications.

Individuals can authorize others to appeal on their behalf by completing an Authorization for Release of Information form if needed.
