WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) and his House Republican colleagues have called upon Speaker Mike Johnson and House Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger to safeguard Americans' Second Amendment freedoms in the forthcoming appropriations package.

In a letter led by Rep. Clyde and signed by over 30 House Republicans, including Representatives Andy Biggs, Lauren Boebert, and Tim Burchett, the lawmakers emphasized the importance of including the Dickey Amendment in the second Fiscal Year 2024 minibus. The Dickey Amendment aims to prevent further funding for anti-gun "studies" conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Rep. Clyde highlighted the necessity of protecting Second Amendment rights, stating, "Treating firearm-related crime and injuries as a public health issue will undoubtedly end in tyranny." He underscored the urgency for House Republicans to prioritize the inclusion of the Dickey Amendment in the upcoming government funding package.

Aidan Johnston, Director of Federal Affairs at Gun Owners of America, echoed the concerns raised by Rep. Clyde, emphasizing the risks associated with biased anti-gun research funded by federal dollars. Johnston stated, "We must ensure no federal funds go toward more biased, anti-gun ‘research’ to encourage unconstitutional gun control policies."

The letter, which also garnered support from organizations like Gun Owners of America, aims to counter recent actions by the Biden Administration that have been perceived as detrimental to Second Amendment rights. Johnston highlighted instances where self-defense statistics were censored and lawful self-defense was restricted under the guise of a "public health emergency."

The Dickey Amendment, passed by Congress in 1996, prohibits the use of federal funds to advocate or promote gun control. Its inclusion in the appropriations bill serves as a critical measure to protect Americans' Second Amendment liberties.

As the debate on gun control and public health continues, Rep. Clyde and his colleagues are steadfast in their efforts to ensure that federal funds are not allocated towards research that may infringe upon constitutional rights.
