Savannah State Athletics saw 30 student-athletes earn degrees during the 201st Savannah State University Commencement on Friday, Dec. 9 at Theodore A. Wright Stadium.
 
Over 40% of those student-athletes earned their degrees with honors. Topping that list was Korbin Allan who earned his bachelor's in biology, Summa Cum Laude.
 
Five student-athletes graduated Magna Cum Laude: Mia Goolsby, women's basketball (Accounting); Venus Ubeibi, women's tennis (Accounting); Jayden Simpkins, football (Middle Grades Education); Jonathan Mock, football (Homeland Security and Emergency Management); and Morgan Green, softball (Biology).
 
Joining the honors list were seven student-athletes who graduated Cum Laude: Bria Gibbs, women's basketball (History); Joseph Smith, baseball (History); Jahvene Whalder, women's track and field (Visual and Performing Arts); Bria Bembery, women's tennis (Behavior Analysis); JaNesa Robinson, softball (Behavior Analysis); Rickell Holden, softball (Biology); and Jasmine Williams, women's track and field (Biology).    
 
Three student-athletes earned post-bachelorette degrees. Women's volleyball player Jedaiah Daniels earned a Master of Business Administration, baseball's DeMorris Gresham earned a Master of Public Administration and football's Djuan Tinsley earned his Master of Mathematics. 
 
Savannah State University conferred its first degree in 1898 to Richard R. Wright, Jr., the son of the founding president. In Friday's commencement, the school awarded over 200 degrees.

Savannah State is the first public historically black college or university in the state of Georgia and the first institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The school established the city's first master's degree program in 1968 and has built upon that rich legacy of academic excellence for the last 132 years.

Savannah State Athletics began in 1902 with a football game on Thanksgiving Day. Over the last 119 years, the Tigers have earned championship titles in multiple divisions and conferences across several of its programs. Savannah State has produced professional baseball players, basketball players, football players and multiple Olympic athletes. Today, the Tigers field 15 men's and women's sports competing at the NCAA Division II level. Twelve programs are members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Women's golf competes in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).
