The Georgia Southern men's soccer team fell to the sixth-ranked Marshall Thundering Herd, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field. The loss ties up the overall record between the two teams at 3-3-1.
In the first half, the Eagles (1-12-1) surrendered two goals to go down 2-0 at the half. Once the second half started, Marshall (8-2-3) scored three more goals before Manuel Prieto got the Eagles on the board with a free-kick that snuck into the bottom left corner of the net. Marshall would score one more to end the match in a 6-1 decision.
"I think we saw why Marshall is a top-ten team and considered a team that's going to be in the mix for a national championship," said head coach John Murphy. "There were times where we started to get back into the game and they would ratchet up their tempo and made it very difficult, which a lot of teams struggle with. I'm disappointed in the scoreline, but I'm not disappointed with the effort. Manuel had a great goal off of a free-kick in the second half to get us on the board, and he really encapsulates what we want here. He's a great student-athlete on and off the field and has a lot of heart. I'm very pleased with him and think that's something we can build off of."
"There's a lot of disappointed guys in the locker room, but there's a lot of fight in this team and we won't stop," Murphy continued. "There's a lot of fight left in this team and we're not going to stop. We still have two games left. We have a chance to honor our seniors on Friday night against a very good West Virginia team and that's where our focus is going to lie in the next couple of days."
