Kyle Harris, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) located in Tallahassee, Florida, where he teaches undergraduate courses in African-American, United States and World History.  Dr. Harris also provides service at FAMU on the University Dean’s Council, the Faculty Senate and the General Education Steering Committee and leads curricular assessment activities in the Department of History, Political Science, Geography and African American Studies. Dr. Harris’ academic research focus is late 19th and early 20th century race relations in southwest Georgia. He is a member of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and the Georgia Association of Historians. Prior to his professorial appointment, Harris served in various leadership roles at FAMU in the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities and the School of Graduate Studies and Research. 

At Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church of Tallahassee, Dr. Harris is a proud member of the Board of Stewards, where he encourages stewardship, discipleship, and philanthropic service. Teaching AME Church History and Leadership, Harris also serves as the President of the Bethel Lay Organization.  

Dr. Harris is a 2004 honor graduate of Early County High School, located in Blakely, Georgia. A third generation Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Wildcat, Harris graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in History from FVSU in 2007. A year later, he earned a Master of Applied Social Science degree from FAMU. Dr. Harris continued his studies at Florida State University where earned a Master of Arts degree in United States History and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in History.

In his spare time, Dr. Harris enjoys beaching, fishing, hiking, and leading various social justice.
