Georgia Southern University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 22
Scovia Ayikoru broke the school indoor record and took third in the 400 to lead the Georgia Southern track and field team at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Ayikoru ran the 400 in 54.83 to break her own school record she set 10 days ago at the Bulldog Open in the Birmingham CrossPlex. Nichole Harris placed sixth in the 800 and recorded the program's third-fastest time (2:14.81).
The distance medley relay team of Harris, Hannah Wise, MaKenna Hillmer and Ella Zierdt finished seventh and recorded the school's third-fastest time (12:24.00). Wise also posted the program's second-best time in the 3000 (10:15.02) and finished 12th.
Arkansas State won the team title for the third consecutive season, Texas State was second and UTA came in third. Ayikoru earns third-team All-Sun Belt accolades, marking the second straight season the fifth-year senior has earned indoor all-conference honors.
Quotables from coach Kelly Carter
"We took a small, powerful squad to conference and where it might not have shown on the final team scoreboard, we had a lot of great performances from student-athletes with PRs that moved them up the school's all-time list. We're looking forward to getting a few more ladies back healthy for the outdoor season."
